Today, Jan 27, 2010 after months of political turmoil, Profirio “Pepe” Lobo was sworn in as Honduras’ new president. Manuel “Mel” Zelaya Honduras’ ex-president who was ousted by the coup on June 28, 2009 had been locked up in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa for the last four months. Yesterday he was granted Political amnesty and today after Pepe became president he escorted Zelaya to the airport to travel with his family to The Dominican Republic.
Although Pepe appears to have a pretty bad track record during his past political career, we are hoping and praying that he will be effective in helping Honduras improve the economic, social, and political problems that it has been suffering for years and even more so since the coup last June. Please pray that this new president would prioritize the poor in his government and that there would be tangible positive changes in the country in regards to education, corruption, violence, infrastructure, health care, etc.
Also please continue to pray for God’s protection over our work with Jubilee and everyone who is involved in the ministry here. Pray that God would provide for us and make our work powerful and effective.
